Hyundai sells a lot of Tucson SUVs in Europe but, if people want to buy the latest "version" of the Tucson next spring they'll need to forget the name and ask for something called an ix35 instead. Hyundai, like so many other automakers, apparently thinks cats walking on keyboards is a great way to name vehicles, and will be bringing the ix35 to the Frankfurt Motor Show next month. While Hyundai isn't saying what sort of powerplant will sit underhood, the company is claiming that enhanced aerodynamics and a "more refined powertrain technology" (compared to the Tucson) will reduce fuel use and CO2 emissions to the point where the running costs for the ix35 will "compete head on ... with mainstream hatchbacks." This is a small SUV, to be sure, but that claim is nonetheless mighty impressive. We'll find out exactly what the numbers are when the ix35 is revealed on September 15th.
